A Digital Biothesiometer is a device used to quantify vibration perception threshold (VPT) and is a crucial tool for detecting diabetic neuropathy. The Digital Biothesiometer is a tabletop device with a vibrating probe. The probe is placed on specific points of the patient's feet. The technician gradually increases the intensity of vibration that is measured in volts till the patient feels the vibration. The voltage at which they feel the vibration is the vibration perception threshold.
A higher voltage indicates a decreased sensitivity to vibration, which is a sign of nerve damage. 0-15 volts reading indicates a normal VPT, while a reading of over 25 volts indicates significant neuropathy and high risk.
Its Use for Physicians
The Biothesiometer is incredibly useful for physicians managing patients with diabetes for several key reasons:
